Personalized learning:
What it is and what it’s not

At the center of personalized learning is the acknowledgement that no two students are alike. It underscores the concept that a one-size-fits-all approach is outdated, a product of the Industrial Revolution that no longer makes sense in today’s more complex world.

A number of definitions exist for the term “personalized learning,” but they are all variations on a theme. The Glossary of Education Reform, developed by the Great Schools Partnership, describes it as, “a diverse variety of educational programs, learning experiences, instructional approaches, and academic-support strategies that are intended to address the distinct learning needs, interests, aspirations, or cultural backgrounds of individual students.”
