In this post, I want to look at how to maximize student learning when using supplemental online content, particularly when there is less direct support from the teacher.<\/p>\n<p>When referring to\u00a0supplemental online content\u00a0I am talking about products\u00a0like\u00a0one of NWEA\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nwea.org\/instructional-connections\/\">Instructional Connections<\/a>\u00a0partners\u00a0that help\u00a0students either explore content based on their own interests, follow a learning path, work on content assigned by their teacher,\u00a0or some combination of those\u00a0options.\u00a0Such offerings\u00a0are often\u00a0used as\u00a0learning center or\u00a0computer lab activities to allow teachers time to\u00a0work\u00a0with\u00a0individual\u00a0students\u00a0or small\u00a0groups.<\/p>\n<p>While a high-quality program should be easy to use for both teachers and students, ease of use shouldn\u2019t suggest a hands-off approach. By applying the same effective teaching strategies that you already use in your core instruction, you can ensure your students get the most out of their time in these programs.<\/p>\n<h2>Connection and coherence are key<\/h2>\n<p>The concept of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edweek.org\/education\/opinion-what-is-schema-how-do-we-help-students-build-it\/2019\/10#:~:text=Schema%20is%20a%20mental%20structure,of%20structure%20in%20the%20brain.\">schema<\/a> is well known in education. At its simplest, schema describes how the brain organizes knowledge into connected ideas.<\/p>\n<p>There is extensive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.educationcorner.com\/schema-theory\/\">research<\/a> that supports the importance of building connections between new ideas and previously learned ones. In an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aft.org\/periodical\/american-educator\/spring-2012\/principles-instruction\">article highlighting teaching strategies<\/a> supported by cognitive science research and observations of master teachers, Barak Rosenshine stated that, \u201cWhen one\u2019s knowledge on a particular topic is large and well connected, it is easier to learn new information and prior knowledge is more readily available for use.\u201d The more robust a set of connections is, the less you need to rely on working memory, which in turn allows you to use working memory to both process new information and apply it to solve problems. The 2018 publication <a href=\"https:\/\/nap.nationalacademies.org\/catalog\/24783\/how-people-learn-ii-learners-contexts-and-cultures\"><em>How People Learn II<\/em><\/a> states it simply: \u201cFacts that are placed into a rich structure are easier to remember than isolated or disconnected ones.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One way to promote\u00a0connected learning is\u00a0through\u00a0ensuring\u00a0coherence\u00a0across a student\u2019s learning experience. In March of this year, TNTP\u00a0published their report\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tntp.org\/publication\/coherence-by-design\/?utm_source=google&amp;utm_medium=cpc&amp;utm_campaign=mc_tntp_fy26coherencebydesign_leadgen_search_google&amp;utm_content=leadgen_coherencebydesign_n\/a_n\/a_n\/a_n\/a_download&amp;utm_term=tntp%20coherence%20by%20design&amp;utm_campaign=MC_TNTP_FY2024_LeadGen_Search_Google&amp;utm_source=adwords&amp;utm_medium=ppc&amp;hsa_acc=8162134280&amp;hsa_cam=21007228526&amp;hsa_grp=196558107580&amp;hsa_ad=806452438541&amp;hsa_src=g&amp;hsa_tgt=kwd-2513054268234&amp;hsa_kw=tntp%20coherence%20by%20design&amp;hsa_mt=b&amp;hsa_net=adwords&amp;hsa_ver=3&amp;gad_source=1&amp;gad_campaignid=21007228526&amp;gbraid=0AAAAApEkEhMZd6zEa7ddwJ7b4eBvmlcBw&amp;gclid=EAIaIQobChMIyd7ppt7DlQMVKjMIBR3mLjmzEAAYASAAEgJXXPD_BwE\"><em>Coherence by Design: Building Instructional Systems That Help Students Catch Up<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0The report highlights how coherent systems\u00a0better support students performing below grade level.<\/p>\n<p>But what is a coherent system? TNTP describes it as a\u00a0system where\u00a0instruction, content, and goals\u00a0are\u00a0aligned\u00a0\u201cacross all learning spaces\u2014from core instruction to intervention and other academic supports\u2014to ensure that all students engage in and are actively prepared for grade-level learning.\u201d\u00a0They note that in many schools, help for such students\u00a0is\u00a0not built to connect directly to grade-level learning and state that \u201cAs a result, these supports often pull students further away from the instruction they need\u00a0most.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the report, TNTP explicitly highlights\u00a0that digital learning platforms\u00a0designed to support a student\u00a0performing below grade-level expectations\u00a0frequently\u00a0present\u00a0\u201cisolated skills that are disconnected from their grade-level learning.\u00a0On paper, this student receives hours of additional support each week. In practice, little of that time reinforces their core learning or addresses their specific grade-level gaps. Instead, their school day feels less like a coherent learning trajectory and more like a maze of disconnected experiences\u2026. By the end of the week, this student has\u00a0been exposed to a patchwork of topics and instructional approaches within the same subject and is left to make sense of those inconsistencies on their own. As a result, learning slows and gaps persist.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Creating\u00a0connection and coherence<\/h2>\n<p>So how can you ensure that students have a coherent learning experience when it comes to supplemental digital learning?\u00a0You likely\u00a0already\u00a0support\u00a0connected understanding\u00a0and coherence within\u00a0your core teaching practices. You\u00a0support connection\u00a0when you\u00a0revisit the idea of repeated addition before introducing the concept of multiplication. You create a coherent learning experience when you\u00a0have students read\u00a0\u201cThe Things They Carried\u201d\u00a0in English\u00a0class\u00a0while\u00a0they are\u00a0studying the Vietnam War in\u00a0social studies.\u00a0By applying the same effective teaching strategies that you already use in your core instruction, you can ensure your students get\u00a0a\u00a0connected,\u00a0coherent learning experience when using digital learning tools.<\/p>\n<p>While most products are designed to save teachers time by placing students on pre-determined learning pathways, most also allow teachers to override this path, reorder it, or assign specific content.\u00a0So,\u00a0while the product may provide information on what content students would benefit from learning or reviewing, you can ensure the sequence of learning aligns to your\u00a0core\u00a0scope and\u00a0sequence.<\/p>\n<p>When starting a new unit of study, pause to\u00a0see what students are currently working on during their supplemental learning time\u00a0and ask the following questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Does the content on their learning\u00a0path\u00a0relate to this upcoming learning in any way?\u00a0If not, what content does?<\/li>\n<li>If the student needs support for accessing the upcoming grade-level\u00a0concepts, what precursor content can I assign or move forward in their learning path?<\/li>\n<li>If the student is ready for enrichment, what content can I assign that will help them explore the\u00a0grade-level concepts\u00a0more deeply?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Ask the questions<\/h2>\n<p>In addition to ensuring the content is connected to the current core learning, explicitly ask students to make active connections between what they are learning online and the topics in your core teaching. Having students complete regular reflections on their independent work is a great way to do this. In addition to asking them to summarize or highlight key concepts in what they learned, ask questions that prompt connection-making. If students are using supplemental time to review or relearn previously taught precursor content, guide them to make the connections between that and the current unit of study. For example, if students are reviewing area concepts while learning about volume, ask them questions like:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How are area and volume alike? How are they different?<\/li>\n<li>How can you use your understanding of area to find volume?<\/li>\n<li>What other concepts or skills have you learned that seem connected to area and volume?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Asking questions and prompting students to compare and contrast ideas helps develop models of understanding, which, in turn, promotes both retention and the ability to transfer knowledge to new situations. It can also increase motivation. If supplemental work seems random and disconnected\u2014part of an incoherent system\u2014it is more likely to feel like busy work, particularly when students do not have control over the topics being explored. Indeed, research examined in <em>How People Learn II<\/em> indicates that when students \u201cengage in artificial, decontextualized tasks, they will develop coping strategies that make sense for those situations, but such strategies will simply amount to \u2018doing school\u2019\u201d as opposed to actively learning.<\/p>\n<h2>Mastering metacognition<\/h2>\n<p>Another familiar concept that can be leveraged to increase the impact of supplemental content is metacognition. Metacognition is the ability to monitor and regulate your own cognitive processes and to consciously adapt your behavior.<\/p>\n<p>While <a href=\"https:\/\/uwaterloo.ca\/centre-for-teaching-excellence\/catalogs\/tip-sheets\/teaching-metacognitive-skills\">students need explicit guidance<\/a> to develop these skills, the benefits of doing so are plentiful. Students who are aware of their mental processes can better recognize when they need more information and can determine if new information is consistent with or in contrast to previous learning. This type of deep thinking about a topic and its connection to prior knowledge helps build the schema discussed previously. The ability to self-regulate also helps students persist in working toward goals.<\/p>\n<p>Practices that support metacognition can be easily connected to supplemental work. When students head off to the computer, be sure to send them with a journal. Get them in the habit of both recording questions that arise during the learning and answering questions that probe their own understanding of and engagement with the material.<\/p>\n<p>Here are four types of questions that can support metacognitive thinking:<\/p>\n<h2><em>Questions about the content<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>These questions support connected learning:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Was this new material, or did you know some or all of it?<\/li>\n<li>Do you have new questions based on the\u00a0activities, readings, or problems?<\/li>\n<li>What was the \u201cmuddiest\u201d part of the learning?<\/li>\n<li>Did the material remind you of anything you have learned or are learning?<\/li>\n<li>What did you know or think about this topic before these activities? How has your understanding changed?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><em>Questions about the presentation<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>These questions help students uncover how they like to learn:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Think about how the material was presented. What\u00a0worked best for you? Why?<\/li>\n<li>What parts of the activities, readings, or problems didn\u2019t you like?<\/li>\n<li>How would you have presented this topic to someone else?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><em>Questions about the level<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>These questions help students <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nwea.org\/blog\/2021\/the-importance-of-student-self-assessment\/\">self-assess<\/a> and can also provide data on whether the student\u2019s current topic or level of study is appropriate:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Were the activities, readings, or problems too easy, too challenging, or just right?<\/li>\n<li>What was the hardest thing you had to do? What was the easiest?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><em>Questions about time and self-regulation<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>These questions help students think about their focus and may also indicate the need to either alter the length of each session or build in breaks:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Did you need more time or did the session seem too long?<\/li>\n<li>Did you lose interest at any point? How did you reconnect to the material?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As you establish general routines and expectations for independent supplemental work, model thinking about these types of questions and define expectations for when and how students will answer them. You might start by focusing on different questions each week and eventually post a list of questions for students to select from as they reflect on their learning.<\/p>\n<h2>Better together<\/h2>\n<p>While it is quite common to have students work in pairs or small groups during core work, online supplemental work is typically done independently. This is because supplemental work is often used to differentiate and individualize learning for students and because most programs and apps are designed to track individual student progress.<\/p>\n<p>However, a <a href=\"https:\/\/eric.ed.gov\/?id=EJ648243\">meta-analysis of research on the impact of small group vs. individual learning on technology<\/a> shows that having students work in small groups, ideally pairs, has significantly more positive impact on achievement than working alone does. Pairing increases the use of\u00a0appropriate learning strategies\u200b and student perseverance in terms of the number of tasks attempted. It also increases student success rates while decreasing the need for\u00a0teacher support\u200b. But how do you balance the need to individualize with the benefits of pairing?<\/p>\n<p>While students need to complete tasks individually so they can level up and show their own progress, you can pair students who are working on the same or related content. Although they are each working on their own computer, you can establish \u201ccomputer buddies\u201d who sit adjacent to each other, help each other get unstuck when needed, and debrief after their learning session to discuss what they were each working on and how their topics relate to each other and to core work.<\/p>\n<p>Depending upon the age of your students and how long your computer block is, you might want to build a break into the work session: students work individually for 8\u201310 minutes, pause for 5\u20136 minutes to discuss what they are learning and ask each other questions, then re-engage in their individual programs for another 8\u201310 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>An interesting extension of pairing is peer teaching. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0361476X14000022\">Studies<\/a> have shown that having students prepare to teach content to others has a short-term improvement on learning, and actually teaching the lesson has a long-term positive impact on learning. Preparing to teach and actually teaching others requires the student to practice retrieving information, which helps them organize and deepen their own thinking, and develop new models of understanding. It is also empowering, particularly for students who may have struggled in the past.<\/p>\n<p>While peer teaching might not be an everyday practice, students reviewing previously learned materials could create and lead a short presentation to either a small group or the whole class both to support their own learning and to activate prior knowledge for other students. Students can also be assigned to teach materials to family and friends or create videos for a classroom library.<\/p>\n<h2>Worth the time<\/h2>\n<p>Online supplemental content can be a great resource for both students and teachers. And while it may be tempting to simply enroll students and let the program do the work, spending a little time upfront building routines to connect this work to the larger work of the classroom will reap greater rewards in terms of engagement and learning.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In my previous post, I dug into some of the reasons teachers turn to online supplemental content and discussed tips for selecting appropriate online supplemental products.
