Today, our Media Spotlight shines on partner district Granger Independent School District (ISD) in Texas. In their June issue, the Texas Association of School Boards’ Lone Star magazine featured Granger ISD on the cover.
The cover story talks about Granger ISD Superintendent Randy Willis and his decision to participate in the OECD Test for Schools, which tests a sample of 15-year old students on literacy, numeracy, and problem-solving skills. Superintendent Willis immediately saw an opportunity, according to the story:
“Because the OECD Test for Schools is administered worldwide, Willis saw a way for the district and its students to measure themselves against other school systems and students around the world.”
While the test was new to Granger ISD, and their district was smaller than the other Texas districts that were participating, Superintendent Willis felt the effort was worth it for the insights the test results provided. In the story, Willis says:
“It is how testing should be… really cutting edge. The best people in the world put this test together. If you want to evaluate student learning, you need a variety of instruments to really see where it is. I really think this is a better way to test.”
