No Excuses University: Using Assessment to Motivate Students

One of the greatest opportunities we have at NWEA is going into the field and hearing firsthand how our assessments and services are impacting students’ lives. Back in 2012, we were able to sit down with one of the founders of TurnAround Schools and the No Excuses University Network, Damen Lopez. This network has two founding principles:

  1. Every child has the right to be prepared for college.
  2. It is the responsibility of adults in the school to develop exceptional systems that make that dream a reality.

No Excuses University: Using Assessment to Motivate Students

Before using Measures of Academic Progress (MAP®) the schools had no tool to help measure student growth. This created a problem for their “kid-centric” approach. Teachers needed a way to breakdown areas where each student showed strength and areas where they needed more help. In addition, students needed the opportunity to see how they could grow academically when they applied themselves and be recognized for that growth. MAP answered the call and what followed became a seamless pairing.
