NWEA Growth Projection Calculator

The NWEA Growth Projection Calculator is available from the secure NWEA Reports Site. After you login, you’ll find a link to download it on the Home page. The Growth Projection Calculator is a tool provided to help you determine how much a student would be projected to grow over a specified number of instructional weeks as compared to students in the same grade and who start with the same initial RIT score. It is an interactive spreadsheet that allows you to enter a student’s RIT score in each subject area along with a number of instructional weeks in order to project a reasonable amount of growth over the time period.

How to use the Growth Projection Calculator
After opening the spreadsheet, click on the red Legend tab. This worksheet will orient you to the two types of displays that are available in the Growth Projection Calculator; one applies to reading, language usage and mathematics subjects in grades K through 10, and one applies to science in grades 2 through 10.

Reading, Language Usage or Mathematics (R-L-M)

  • Choose the subject that interests you then decide the point from which you would like to calculate growth projections - from the beginning of the academic year or from the end of the academic year.

On the R-L-M worksheet you’ve selected, the cells with green background and bold numbers are editable. For grades, 2 through 10, you can enter a starting RIT value and the number of instructional weeks that you anticipate will pass before the next test administration. After you’ve entered a RIT value or the number of instructional weeks for a subject the numbers for growth (Est), standard deviation (SD) and reported growth (Rpt) will be updated automatically when you press Enter.

Science (2-10) and Reading, Mathematics (K-1)
  • The two science worksheets allow growth projections to be made from the beginning of the year only. The growth projections for science are based on term-to-term growth only (fall-to-spring and fall-to-fall). Instructional weeks are not taken into account.
  • For grades K and 1 in Reading and Mathematics term-to-term (fall-to-spring) growth estimates are available, so you'll only need to enter the starting RIT.
  • On the science worksheet you’ve selected for any grade, 2 through 10, you can enter a starting RIT value in the cells with green background and bold numbers.
  • After you’ve entered a RIT value in a grade the numbers for growth (Est), standard deviation (SD) and reported growth (Rpt) will be updated automatically when you press Enter.
