Freelance Item Writing

NWEA maintains a high quality bank of items, developed by educators with broad curricular and/or teaching background. We continue to expand our bank of items by working with select individuals - current educators or professional item writers - on a freelance basis under paid contract.

Currently, we have a need for item writers in the following areas:

  • We have no freelance item writing opportunities at this time. Please bookmark this site and check back periodically as our needs change frequently.

Interested individuals meeting the following qualifications are invited to submit their current CV or résumé to ItemWriting@nwea.org. Please reference the posting(s) to which application is being made.

  • 2+ years teaching experience in Language Arts, Math, or Science
  • Master's Degree in content area preferred
  • Previous item writing and/or test development experience preferred

We are especially interested in test items that speak to the diversity of experiences that children have, so we would like to hear from educators that can represent these diverse experiences in our items.

Contracted Freelance Item Writers must be able to work remotely, with a strong adherence to deadlines. Because this is a remote-work position, writers must be able to negotiate technology and learn new technologies as needed.

Following the selection process, qualified individuals will be added to our item writer bank and will be contacted for availability when specifications in discrete content areas are open for fulfillment. For more information, please contact us via e-mail at ItemWriting@nwea.org.
